Explore the Escalator Ecosystem

Organizations & Support

Transit Authorities

Plan station access and fund replacement work. TransLink describes replacing station equipment while keeping access routes available.

Elevating Device Safety Authorities

Inspect regulated equipment and enforce safety requirements. TSSA’s example applies to Ontario; it is not the authority for the TransLink sites in British Columbia.

Standards Development Organizations

Publish safety codes for design, installation, operation and maintenance. Local authorities decide which editions apply.

Industry Associations

NAEC represents elevator contractors and offers professional certification programs. Association membership does not itself establish a local licence.

Organizations to Explore

TransLink

Runs elevator and escalator replacement programs at Metro Vancouver stations and tells riders about access during work.

Technical Standards and Safety Authority

Inspects regulated devices and sets out owner duties in Ontario.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers

Publishes the A17 code family for elevators and escalators.

National Association of Elevator Contractors

Represents industry members and offers certification programs.

Lift and Escalator Industry Association

LEIA represents UK companies that supply and maintain lifts, escalators, passenger conveyors and related equipment. It publishes guidance, provides education and training information, and maintains a member directory. It is a trade association and advisory body; membership does not replace the approvals or inspections a job requires.

Bay Area Rapid Transit

BART operates a rail network whose stations use elevators and escalators. It publishes equipment status and alternative accessible routes, and carries out maintenance and replacement work. This makes it an owner and user of building transport equipment. Live outage lists change; readers should use BART’s current status page before travelling.
